The Special Diver Unit, or SDU, is the most powerful member of Orcatron's family of diver-to-diver/vessel communications systems. The SDU is an effective underwater system especially suited for commercial and military applications.

Designed for long-range communications up to 10 km, the SDU utilizes Orcatron's proven and sophisticated ultrasonic single sideband (SSB) technology. This same technology is employed in Orcatron's extremely successful Scubaphone and Scubaphone products that provides the SDU unequalled performance in terms of:

clarity of speech
extended range in both fresh and salt water,
clear communications in strong currents and around obstacles,
ease of use,
long battery life, and
reliability in professional use.

While Orcaton's crystal-controlled SSB techniques provide distortion free transmission, the sophisticated and proprietary electronic circuitry and filtering enhance speech clarity and reduce extraneous noises even under adverse conditions.

In order to accommodate the 10 km range of the SDU, low carrier frequencies are used with transmitter powers increased to 50 watts. Divers however, can easily switch to low power (0.5 watt) for shorter-range comminications such as those with other divers. This reduces the chance of detection (the acoustic footprint is reduced), improves the quality of sound and conserves battery power.
